Falconers Telemetry Tips

Falconers telemetry - a falconers friend. Telemetry is not a mind blowing piece of tracking equipment, however getting the basics of telemetry right is something some falconers struggle with. This is why Lost Falcon has a "how to use telemetry" page.

Falconry Telemetry The Basics

Purchase your Telemetry before getting your falconry bird.

Learn the Telemetry basics, read the manual, get to know your system and indeed which system you have.

Practise with your telemetry, before you need it, before you get your bird.

Falconers practise with their telemetry by giving the reciever to a trusted child, to pedal off and hide on their bike, giving the telemetry reciever to their partner to hide etc.

A word from a falconers experience with telemetry "Have to say all the practice with telemetry  doesn't prepare for the first occasion the bird does missing though, there is a massive difference between tracking a stationary target or one for fun v's tracking the real one that moves with telemetry

.A CALM HEAD IS NEEDED, while your heart is pumping with that extra vigor.

Have a spare telemetry transmittor, just in case one develops a fault.

Each batch of batteries purchased are checked for life expectancy.

A seperate set of backup batteries are kept in the car and in the telemetry carry case.

Two checks are made to the telemetry equipment prior to flight, The first telemetry check when reconnecting the batteries and again on attaching the telemetry transmittor  to the bird.

Telemetry transmittor batteries changed regularly and diaried.

About four weeks before the bird is ready to restart after the moult, check the telemetry system out.

"Many people own a telemetry system

but don't know how to use it to it's

optimum performance.

Each time I'm going to fly the gos, I'll

check the telemetry before attaching it

to the hawk.

Points to observe -

1) Select correct channel on the

receiver to match the transmitter.

2) Tune the receiver to obtain the best

/ strongest signal.

3) Ensure that the batteries have

plenty of life left in them.

4) If you lose your hawk and need

someone elses help to track - make

sure you know the frequency / channel

/ tuning point to supply them with the

information.

Far to many times you hear someone

has lost a hawk and you ask what

frequency is it on - basic reply "173",

this means nothing without the

channel and tuning point.

An incorrectly tuned transmitter will

not function to any where it's true

potential - this could prove the

difference between a found hawk and

a lost hawk".
